Walking on the Milky Way (song)
"Walking on the Milky Way" is a song by the British band OMD. It was released as a single in August 1996 and appeared on their ''Universal'' album a month later. The song reached #17 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's first UK Top 20 single in over five years, and their last UK Top 40 entry to date. Although it was unable to crack the Top 10, the song became one of the band's biggest radio hits.〔"Remembering: OMD". ''Uncut''. October 1999. "(on the Milky Way' ) became a surprise radio hit in the latter half of the decade...() gained particularly strong support from Capital ().〕 It became further ingrained in public consciousness due to its use in television commercials for Mars' Milky Way chocolate bar in 1998. The group were flanked by a full string orchestra for their ''Top of the Pops'' performance of the song.
Characterised by an ethereal and melancholy sound and a soaring delivery of the lyric, the song wistfully recalls the glory days of youth but cautions that time cannot be turned back. Critic Dave Thompson in AllMusic praised Andy McCluskey's vocal, and wrote: "With its sublime melody and a suitably anthemic chorus, this stellar single, released in August 1996, was a deserving Top 20 British hit."〔("Walking on the Milky Way" review ) at Allmusic〕 McCluskey has noted that the repeated "Hey, hey!" refrain was written with the intention that it would become a call and response with live audiences.〔Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The B-side "Mathew Street" references the location of Eric's Club in Liverpool, where OMD made their first public performance.
